Biography

Vicky Mokbel was born and raised in Beirut. In 1985, due to the civil war, she was forced to move to Paris where she graduated from the Icart Photo school with a European Bachelor of Photography. This immersion allowed her to rub shoulders with big names of the photography world, namely her professor Jean-Luc Monterosso, founder and director of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris.

In 1988, she became the assistant of photographer Francois Henry in Paris and worked with him for 5 years. The studio was in charge of major advertising campaigns for renowned European firms.

Through this experience, she trained her eye and strengthened her technique. In 1993, she returned to Beirut to start her own studio. Since then, she has been collaborating with advertising agencies, private clients and has been working on private orders in the Middle East.

Vicky’s love story with photography allowed her to work with a wide array of subjects and experiment with different formats (Sinar large format, Hasselblad medium format 6X6 and 24×36 reflex). Since the beginning, she developed a fondness for the 1:1 square, a format that over time established itself as her favorite. She specialized in advertising photography and worked for clients such as M&C Saatchi, Lowe Pimo, Leo Burnett, Impact Bbdo, Procter&Gamble, CNBC Arabia…. She also worked with magazines such as Architectural Digest, ArchDaily, Déco Magazine, Laha Magazine… In parallel, she explored black and white photography and focused on portraits that she processed and developed herself.

For this demanding, curious and meticulous photographer whose sensibility to order and attention to detail are reflected in the images she creates, “it’s all a matter of relation”. Moving away from disparate elements, she creates links between colors, lines, shapes, light and shadows, weaving these components together to produce pictures that are often compared to paintings.

After 4 years of traveling around the world and focusing on pieces of contemporary architecture, Vicky now merges her two passions, photography and architecture, in her series “Ubraneyes”. Comprised of urban images taken in different countries with an emphasis on detail, the collection aims to transcend contemporary architecture by putting it out of context, granting it a second lecture, and a second identity too.

Biography

Youssef Nassar is a critically acclaimed Lebanese born (15/11/1990) Canadian artist who is known for his unconventional work in photography and filmmaking. Raised in a family that encouraged his interest in the art of film, Youssef entered the field of Radio/TV studies at Notre Dame University, where his passion for photography and filmmaking blossomed.

Youssef Nassar has been noted for his radical approach in art, escaping from the mainstream “cliché” and repetitions to highlight sexuality, violence and macabre.

Being a guitarist himself, Youssef intertwined his love for film and photography with music; with his work being greatly inspired by songs. When asked, Youssef’s leading inspiration came from the Grammy award nominated musician Steven Wilson, the prolific solo artist and lead singer/guitarist of progressive rock band Porcupine Tree.

Youssef’s film ‘The Exhibition’ featured Steven Wilson’s ‘The Raven That Refused To Sing’. When Wilson saw the film after granting Youssef the necessary copyrights, he was impressed and later asked Youssef to direct a video for the song “Perfect Life” taken from his album “Hand. Cannot. Erase.” released in 2015. The video, released in February 2015, was lauded for it’s beautiful, warm colour palette and dream-like imagery.

Youssef has also worked with many local bands and also been a part of many photography exhibitions and digital screenings of his work.

Biography

Julie Audic & Christian Rizk are architects and independent artists. They have been collaborating for 15 years with galleries, museums, and institutions around the world. Their artwork is part of private and public collections. They have developed a pioneer photographic approach called Intensive Photography. The result seems to flirt with painting but the work is purely photographic.

Without any retouching or digital manipulation, what is revealed is a new way of looking at cities, sports and the performing arts. This work based on a specific technique of inverse chromatics and open shutter is inspired by the techniques used around the birth of photography.

Audic Rizk’s photographs aim at challenging our perceptions of reality and questioning its nature; Is it something out there or do we create reality through our projections? Does this form of art reveal invisible forces or does it produce them? These artworks represent a groundbreaking vector to investigate on light creating its own art, that is, photo-graphy.

Biography

Born in Bamako, Mali 1993, I have been in love in photography for as long as I can remember.

Sensitive by nature, emotional and passionate about storytelling, I try to venture into the intimate spaces of human experience, propelling the spectator into the unique universe of each of my subjects. As I expand my photographic repertoire and builds my personal style, my chief inspiration derives from Seydou Keita to Nan Goldin and Sophie Calle.

In September 2015, I won the fifth edition of the Byblos Bank Award for photography at BEIRUT ART FAIR. In the very same month, my work “Vulnerable Visits” appeared at Raw Talents, a collective exhibition held at Beirut’s Art Factum gallery.

In 2016 at the Byblos Bank Headquarters I exhibited my first solo exhibition called “Beyond Sacrifice” complemented with audios. After the solo, my series “Beyond Sacrifice” was selected for the ‘Amman Image Festival in Jordan.

I took part in the “New World/Nouveau Monde” exhibition at Beirut Art Fair – Biel curated by Franco-Algerian Artist Halida Boughriet. A couple of months later, I was selected to participate during 6-month to the Arab Documentary Photography Program (ADPP) curated by The Arab Fund for Arts and culture – AFAC, Prince Claus Fund – PCF and Magnum Foundation – MF.

In 2017 ‘Victoria’ was exhibited during the 32nd Salon d’Automne at the Sursock Museum since it’s opening in 1961 bringing together artists, art critics, and the public in a lively debate on the state of art in Lebanon.

A few weeks later I exhibited a selection of seven photographs at Remomero: an Italian Gallery where contemporary art meets the Mediterranean.

In 2018 I got the chance to show and speak my work during the Blink and the New York Times Portfolio Review in New York.

My photograph untitled “Victoria” has been selected to be exhibited at the Chania Photo Festival from 28 August until 5 September 2018 turning the town of Chania into an international centre of artistic expression focusing on photography with 320 other artists from around the world.
