Biography

My name is Haytham Achkar, and I am a freelance photographer. My journey through photography started around 8 years ago when I used to capture the beautiful landscapes around me in Lebanon on my hikes. I have always had an interest in creating anything from scratch, and this is where my love for photography grew: to be able to create a story through visuals.

Today, I am a mechanical engineer but am working my way through photography; both growing and learning. Mainly, I am a landscape and adventure travel photographer. I travel around the world to take photos of amazing landscapes and beautiful places.

Biography

I was born and raised in Beirut and never wanted to be a photographer. Growing up in a war-torn country, photos often were — and still are — the only remnant of the many people who don’t exist anymore. These people unwittingly became mythical, for each photo of them hid fantastical stories that only the adults lived and told; it was magic.

But magic wears off with age, and a strictly scientific education, graduate degrees in Engineering and Business, and a corporate career wiped out most of what was left of it. It wasn’t until I hit my thirties that I realized how much I needed photography; both as a therapy tool and as a way to discover oddities within the mundane.

In 2013 a group of photographers from around the world, including me, started the Observe Collective. It was borne out of a ‘common fascination with watching and documenting the diverse humanity that surrounds us.’ Aside from this shared interest, I can’t but be extremely grateful to these now-14 talented individuals, for their support, friendship, and for shaping my photographic education.

Professionally known as a business developer, I also happen to be an extreme sports and travel fanatic. I grew up with a curiosity in photography, but it wasn’t until I moved to India that I really knew what impact it had on me. Through my lens, I was able to capture different momentums that really made me wonder about the complexities that is our world.

My uttermost goal is to bring the audience a step closer to uncovering the vague parts of humanity that can only be expressed through the art of photography and a whole lot of mindfulness.

Besides developing my business, I am currently a freelancer with collaborations on schedule. Mainly, always ready to capture the next big thing.

Biography

Jack Dabaghian has enjoyed a long and successful career, spanning 30 years of dedication to journalism and photography and reflecting his fascination for the power of images. Born in Beirut in 1961, he covered the Lebanese Civil War as a war photographer, bearing witness to the conflict that tore the nation apart.

Following a successful career in Europe, where Jack honed his interest in the aesthetic image through fashion photography, he took up the directorship of the Middle East photo service at Reuters. In his 20 years as a war photographer, Jack covered the Iran/Iraq war and the conflicts in Lebanon, Palestine, Rwanda, Zaire, Algeria, and Iraq. His images were published in leading international titles such as Newsweek, Time Magazine, The International Herald Tribune, The New York Times, Paris Match and The Economist, to name but a few.

Through his war images, Jack has testified unflinchingly to the violence and agony of humankind. His ethos has ever been to highlight the hatred and destruction wrought by the conflicts of these past few decades. After 25 long years of photographing conflict, Jack’s need to distance himself from the monstrosity and barbarity of war and from the proximity to death and destruction led him to develop a humanistic approach to his work.

Through his more recent images, Jack investigates a peaceful, fundamentally kind and authentic humanity. Devoid of conflict and aggression, sublimating the murderous impulse of man, his photography is centered on experiencing the aesthetic and the wonder of human creativity. In 2012, Jack started working on personal projects including identity, global warming, and abandoned places. A war photographer turned ethno-photographer, Jack captures the beauty and creativity of nomadic tribes in Asia and Africa. His images testify to the visual and artistic nature of ancestral societies and to our own nostalgia for a blessed earliest paradise. Despite the threat of an encroaching modern world, the hope is that these images do not become documents of what once was, but rather pay tribute to the continued existence of vibrant peoples and cultures.

I Live in Egypt

Though my passion for the mountains long preceded my passion for photography, I have found that photography often provides the motivation to explore places I might not usually hike to, in weather I might not usually prefer to hike in, at times of day that I might usually rather be sleeping. The result is that my photography takes me to spectacular scenes I might not witness otherwise, and I hope to share these scenes with others through my photos.

Biography

Growing up, I was denied a very precious gift: enjoying the presence of my grandfather by my side. He fell sick, and although he could have made it, it was a hip fracture along with his sickness that took him away. I never really minded that until my grandmother fell sick, and I had to visit her often at my dad’s request. See, dad and I are accomplices, and I couldn’t have possibly refused him this. I’ve heard many stories about my grandfather, not the kind you’d like to hear or be proud of. But now-now I had the chance to hear the other side. I vowed myself to see my grandmother every Saturday, a word which I have kept for the past 4 years. I listened and listened, and the more I did, I realized I loved my grandfather so much, and that this bond goes beyond death or the physical world. I started loving him for all the times he was good, but also all the while he was bad. I yearned to talk to him, and I often spent my time gazing at the ceiling while I lay in my grandmother’s room, asking myself what would have it been like to have him around, to talk to him, for real, to see him wear his boots and ride his horse, hear his voice.

I found myself taking photos in black-and-white. I always saw the world from a different perspective. I lived it lone, peculiar, isolated. I found solace in black-and-white, in a memory that is here to stay, in a past that is at the grasp of my hand.

All of my work is a celebration of this emotion.
